It starts with a feral plant in the Australian scrub that nobody can fully explain, and traces it back two centuries to a shipment of seed from Calcutta. It follows the webbed leaf from an Australian grower’s garden all the way back to a 1916 hemp field in Virginia. It goes to the banks of the Amur River, on the border between Russia and China, where the single-leaflet mutation behind Giant Pur Pur was found in a wild population.
